GRPD holding community meeting tonight

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) --- Grand Rapids police will hold a public meeting tonight to discuss improving its relationship with the community.

It's the first in a series of upcoming community conversations.

Department representatives will talk about their mission, determine what's important to the community, and make sure those priorities drive department goals, officials said.

Tonight's meeting begins at 6 o'clock, at Rockford Construction on First Street and Seward Avenue.

4 GR firefighters hurt during overnight house fire

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Four firefighters were hurt after a fire caused a partial collapse overnight on the city's northwest side.

Dispatchers say reports of smoke came in just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. It happened on Lexington Avenue between Bridge Street and Lake Michigan Drive.

The firefighters who were hurt were taken to the hospital and have since been released. An updated statement from the Grand Rapids Fire Department indicated four fighters were injured, rather than two as first reported.

Damage is estimated at more than $600,000.

There's still no word on what caused that fire.

Grand Rapids employees collect water for Flint

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) – Members of the Grand Rapids Employees Independent Union held a water drive Saturday to collect fresh drinking water for Flint residents.

“It’s important to us as city employees that produce water for West Michigan, clean safe drinking water, for us to step up to the plate and do something right for Flint,” said Doug Bentz, the event organizer.

President Barack Obama declared a federal emergency in Flint on Saturday, releasing federal financial aid and assistance to help with this man-made public health crisis.

Missing Grand Rapids woman, 40, found safe

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Grand Rapids Police Department say they have located Ma-Josefina Ramirez-Munoz.

The 40-year-old woman was considered missing and endangered by the GRPD. Ramirez-Munoz left her home on Dorchester Ave SW on Sunday afternoon. She had not been seen since and suffers from mental illness.

Ramirez-Munoz was last seen wearing a black coat, gray sweater and black dress pants. She may be carrying a white plastic grocery bag containing her medicine.

10 car accident reported in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Up to ten vehicles were reported to be involved in an accident on Grand Rapids' Northwest side Tuesday morning.

Grand Rapids police told WZZM 13 the accident was called in around 8 a.m. on Lake Michigan Drive at Maynard Ave.

Fundraiser held to help Mitten brewer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A fundraiser Thursday night collected money to help a popular West Michigan brewer recover after he was badly hurt in an accident.

The Mitten's Alexander Atkin was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in Guatemala in late November.

Half of the money from food sales Thursday night at the Mitten is going to help Atkin. There was also a silent auction and live music.

MDOT plans public meeting on US-131 project in GR

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- MDOT will hold a public meeting in Grand Rapids next week to review plans for construction on US-131.

The project includes resurfacing and joint replacement on the freeway's southbound lanes between Ann and Pearl streets. Crews will also build a connector lane to join the the interchanges of Ann and Leonard. It will be similar to the lane built in 2013 on the northbound side.

The meeting runs from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. next Tuesday at MDOT's Grand Region office.
