ArtPrize exhibits damaged by Tuesday's storms

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM)- ArtPrize got off to a bit of a rough start Wednesday because some of the exhibits were damaged by Tuesday night's storms.  WZZM 13's Sarah Barwacz has details in the attached video report.

How Many People Have YOU Fed Today?

Meet  my son, Paul. He’s five years old. And we’re really proud of him.

I’m a little tired of referring to him as “Buddy Boy” or just the impersonal “my son,” and besides that, there’s no getting around seeing his name in this post anyway.

The kid deserves some recognition, if I’m allowed to be a proud mommy today.

Paul forfeited gifts at his fifth birthday party (the kids’ version) in lieu of food for Kids Food Basket, a local organization that provides sack suppers for school kids who might otherwise go home hungry.  Besides that, he willingly (more or less) left his friends playing outside to volunteer to make sandwiches for an entire school.

ArtPrize piano project begins in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids (WZZM) - With only a few days until the start of ArtPrize 2010, the artists are making sure their pieces are in their place.

Sunday, English artist Luke Jerram, placed the first of 20 street pianos at the El Sombrero restaurant on Bridge Street.

Jerram's entry is called 'Play Me I'm Yours.'

The concept is to bring music to urban communities.

The pianos were donated and will be placed throughout Grand Rapids in the hope that people will share their creativity by playing them.

"The pianos really act as a blank canvas for everyone else's creativity," said Jerram.  "So rather than asking the public to go into a museum, we're effectively delivering a piano to their doorstep. It's a way of taking ownership and activating the urban landscape."

Each piano will be painted by various groups.

East Grand Rapids rolls over Union

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The East Grand Rapids Pioneers looked to remain unbeaten Friday, when they traveled to Houseman Field to take on the Union Red Hawks.

Early on East Grand Rapids had it going.  Ryan Elble hooked up with Deandre Grady on the quick slant.  He was in from 15 yards out.  Pioneers had their way.

Later Elble handed the ball to David Drummond.  He drove it forward, breaking several Union would-be tacklers. He got free at the 15 and kept his balance before diving in for the score.  That made it 35 - 0 East Grand Rapids.

In the end, Pioneers rolled union 51 - 8.

West Catholic 24 Comstock Park 12

COMSTOCK PARK (WZZM) -- The West Catholic Falcons looked to continue their dominance in the O-K Blue, as they took on the Comstock Park Panthers Friday.

In the 1st quarter there was a little confusion for the Falcons.  Lance Bewten-Dyke ran into his own man, fumbled the ball.  Comstock Park fell on it for the recovery but the turnover led to nothing.

Points were hard to come by in this game until just before the half.  Lance Bewten-Dyke with the q-b keeper for West Catholic took it right side for the score.

West Catholic beat Comstock Park 24 - 12.

Job Fair underway at the Salvation Army's Kroc Center

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- The Salvation Army is looking for people to fill more than 100 jobs at its new community center.  A job fair is being held at the Kroc Community Center on South Division Avenue.  They are looking for applicants to fill 120 part-time positions at the new facility opening next month.

"We have several positions available," says Major Marc Johnson of the Salvation Army, "...the ones we have today are things like front-desk help, rec aides, food service specialists, maintenance, those types of things."

For hours, hundreds of job seekers lined up outside the new Kroc Center with the hopes of landing a job.  "It would mean everything to me to get a job out here today," says job-seeker, Annette Vaught.  Another hopeful job-seeker, Dennis Schmaltz said, "You can't beg, borrow, or steal a job out here right now so I thought I'd give this place a chance."
