The 'Shop Local' movement heads west

The 'Shop Local' movement heads west

Coming off the heels of a successful event called WinterWest, the grassroots movement WelcomeWest is now encouraging residents to buy local, Westside style. A group of residents has committed to make all purchases in the month of May from Westside establishments, will share their experiences on their website (www.WelcomeWest.org), and is encouraging others to share about Westside purchases via Twitter (#livewest) and Facebook (@WelcomeWest).

"The intent of this is to experience as many uniquely Westside things as possible, to discover the hidden gems in our neighborhoods, and to share them with others," said Kyle Van Strien, Westside resident and WelcomeWest co-founder. While looking for these gems, the group is also seeking to discover what the Westside is missing, and hopefully provide ideas and encouragement for people looking to start businesses here.

Splurge, an awesome Salon

Splurge, an awesome Salon

If you are looking for a great haircut or style, then the Splurge Salon in Grand Rapids is the place for you.  The salon is located at 1140 Monroe NW just a hop and a skip from the corner of Leonard & Monroe in a small strip mall behind Sheldon Cleaners.

Kristin Hollebeek is the gal I have been going to for years and she does an awesome job each and every time I go for a cut. Call the salon for an appointment with her at 616-726-2300.

The salon also offers other services such as nails, massages, etc. You will love the décor that offers a very relaxing atmosphere and the friendliness of everyone who works there.

Westside Post Office Branch busy

Westside Post Office Branch busy

Stopped by the post office during my many errands.

It was busy than normal because taxes are due.

Workers though are still smiling and helping out customers like they normally do.

If you are one of many procrastinators, like myself, here's an easy link to find out what time your branch will remain open.

Parkside the Neighborhood Store

Parkside the Neighborhood Store

Parkside Market is located at 1153 Fulton St. NW, just a short walk from John Ball Park. This is a market that has been around for many years to serve the neighborhood.

A couple years ago, the market was purchased and remodeled, making it all fresh & new again. Just recently I stopped there to purchase a few items only to notice that stock in the store seemed to be very sparse. It gave me a bad feeling and I was thinking to myself, “Don’t tell me this is going to be a business of the past soon.”

Parkside probably has one of the best Polish Kielbasas in the entire city of Grand Rapids, along with so many other great fresh meat case offerings. If you have not tried it yet and you like Kielbasa, make a point of stopping in and getting some. You will love it.

The clerks in the store are very friendly to everyone who comes in the door. The store caters to shut-ins, even delivering their groceries to them.

G-Sync - At The Intersection of Houston and Portland

G-Sync - At The Intersection of Houston and Portland

From Rapid Growth:

Numerous studies tell us that as oil prices rise, major population shifts begin. But most importantly, our personal transportation choices are subject to change -- especially in urban areas.

If you have traveled abroad, then you know very well what cities have excellent public transportation and you know which ones don't.

The lack of good public transportation is why you get a Houston, but once in a while, you get a Portland. Successful public transportation all comes down to planning.

The United Nations conducted a worldwide population study a few years ago, showing that by the year 2030, our urban centers will contain the vast majority of population growth. People will be migrating back to the cities because essential services are best served in dense regions.

While the mega-cities will grab plenty of headlines and people, the significant new growth will be happening within the smaller cities.
