My Town: Student Great Lakes protection projects on display May 14

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—  High School students from six area districts will showcase their efforts to protect the Grand River watershed and the Great Lakes during the Groundswell Student Showcase May 14.

Grand Valley State University is showcasing the exhibit, which provides hands-on environmental learning for students throughout Kent County.  The projects will be on display on the big screen and in the Beacon Lobby at Celebration Cinema North in Grand Rapids.

My Town: West Catholic greenhouse takes shape

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Construction is underway on a greenhouse designed by pre-engineering students at West Catholic High School.

The students raised more than $8,000 for the greenhouse, which they will design and build right outside the school.  In a photo posted on West Catholic High School’s Facebook page on May 6, you can see the students putting up the walls.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Student filmmakers are getting ready for the final round of the 2014 Bishop Baraga Film Festival Competition.

Students in grades 8-12 submitted short videos about their Catholic faith.   The competition has been whittled down to ten finalists from four districts.  During Champions Night on May 13, their films will grace the big screen at Celebration Cinema North in Grand Rapids.    A panel of judges will pick the top three films, which will receive cash prizes. The grand prize is $2,000.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Researchers behind the Laker Line Study are crediting an online app for more than doubling public engagement.

The study team is using MindMixer, a customizable online survey system, to gather feedback from the community as they try to determine the future of the RAPID line connecting downtown Grand Rapids to Grand Valley State University’s Allendale campus.  The route upgrade will include stops on the city’s west side and Standale.  RAPID officials say the current 50 Campus Connector route has experienced the sharpest ridership increase of any route, carrying more than 12,000 riders each weekday during the school year.

Virtual School Principal Receives  2014 International Distance Learning Award

Michigan Connections Academy’s school leader has been honored by the United States Distance Learning Association  with a 2014 International Distance Learning Award.

Bryan Klochack, principal of the full-time, tuition-free, virtual public school for students in grades K-12, received the “Outstanding Leadership by an Individual in the Field of Distance Learning” award in the Online Technology K-12 Education category.

Klochack, a veteran educator and online learning advocate, has led the statewide (and Okemos-based) Michigan Connections Academy since the school’s opening in 2011.

MSU’s second annual Gran Fondo cycling event raises funds for skin cancer research

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Michigan State University College of Human Medicine announces plans for its second annual Gran Fondo on June 28, 2014.

Italian for “Big Ride,” proceeds from this this non-competitive cycling event go towards programs to increase awareness, prevention and detection of skin cancer and supports MSU’s skin cancer research.
