West Catholic senior awarded $100,000 college scholarship

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.— A West Catholic senior will be heading to the University of Notre Dame after winning a prestigious scholarship. 

Jackie Wilson is one of only 25 students to receive the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholarship from the University of Notre Dame. More than 700 incoming Notre Dame freshmen applied for the scholarship, which will provide Wilson with $100,000 towards a four-year education at Notre Dame.  The scholarship will also allow Wilson to travel all over the world through four summer experiences.

The Hesburgh-Yusko Scholarship Program is comprehensive and merit-based.  The scholarship is meant for students who can transform the Notre Dame community, the Catholic church and the world.

With a 4.522 grade point average, Wilson is the 2013 class Salutatorian at West Catholic High School.

School is just starting for local MSP trooper recruits

School is just starting for local MSP trooper recruits

The school year is wrapping up for many people, but it’s just beginning for dozens prospective Michigan State Police troopers.

Sunday, May 12, 80 men and women from across the state began the 125th Trooper Recruit School.  For the next 21 weeks, MSP members and academy staff will train the recruits in firearms, water safety, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing and precision driving.  Recruits who successfully complete the training will graduate October 4.

Michigan State Police selected recruits from more than 3,000 potential candidates.

Grand Rapids, Mich. (Arthritis Foundation) – Honoring 14-year-old Riley Innes of Grand Haven, the Arthritis Foundation will host Arthritis Walk on May 4, 2013, at the John Ball Park Zoo in Grand Rapids.

This annual event promotes the health benefits of physical activity while raising awareness and support for programs, services, and research that help people with arthritis.

Arthritis Walk is a fun and non-competitive three-mile walking event. Walkers will enjoy refreshments, music, messages, and other family-friendly activities all on the beautiful grounds of the John Ball Park Zoo. Proceeds support the Arthritis Foundation’s work to prevent, control, and find a cure for arthritis.

Bowling for a Cure, Sunday, April 28th

Westgate Bowl is the place to be on Sunday, April 28th if you would like to participate in the Comstock Park Relay for Life/American Cancer Society fundraising event called “Bowling for a Cure.”

The event, located at 4486 Alpine Ave NW, begins at 5:00pm on Sunday. The fee to participate is $10.00 per person and it includes two games of bowling, shoe rental and pizza.

A portion of all proceeds will go toward Relay for Life of Comstock Park.

National Day of Prayer in Walker

The City of Walker will be having a National Day of Prayer gathering at noon on May 2nd at the Veterans Memorial Circle, located near the covered walkway that runs between Walker City Hall and the Kent District Library branch at 4243 Remembrance Rd. NW.

Mayor Barbara Holt, area clergy and others will pray for the seven centers of influence: government, media, military, family, education, church and businesses. It is expected the event will last about 45 minutes.

In the case of inclement weather, the event will still go on inside the Walker City Hall City Commission Chambers.

Senior Odyssey of the Mind Competition

Senior Odyssey of Michigan will host teams of older adults who will compete against each other in Odyssey of the Mind, on Saturday, April 27th at the Ceglarek Fine Arts Center in Allendale from 10:00am – 12 Noon.
