Youth employment program tends neglected properties

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Some West Michigan teenagers spent Friday working outside, cleaning up the yard of a West Side house.

That yard on Stafford is just one neglected property being cleaned up by the teens, who are part of the Other Way Ministry's Youth Employment Service Program paid for the Rental Property Owners Association of Kent County.

This is the 31st summer the YES Program has been cleaning yards in Grand Rapids.

"We've been doing anywhere from four to six properties a year," said the RPOA's Clay Powell. "We let the neighborhood association determine which properties really need to be addressed, then we work with the homeowners on that."

Search warrant: Officers saw illegal gambling at bar

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - There's new information about a raid this past spring at a bar on the West Side of Grand Rapids.

The Grand Rapids Police Department began investigating in the fall of 2014, after receiving information that there may have been an illegal gambling operation at Putt Putts bar, 1148 W. Fulton Street.

The tip suggested a 66-year-old man was running that gambling operation.

Officers said that several times they saw him carrying paperwork in and out of the bar. The search warrant also says an undercover officer placed bets with the man, and money was paid in and out from those wagers. It also says the man conducted business with several patrons.

So far, no charges have been filed in the case, but the Grand Rapids police say they're still investigating.
