Lexicon Club destroyed in fire | News
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A fire has destroyed a popular social club in Grand Rapids. It happened at the Lexicon Club, on Lexington Avenue, on the city's NW side.
"It's just a super sad day," says Will Allersma. He and several others watched Lexicon Club burn down just after noon on Friday. They can't help but think about the good times they had there. "We're a mix of everybody, African American, German, Dutch, a membership type place. Big family, loving friends."
Bob Scheidel says, "We drank beer, played pool, we had good times."
The fire was called-in just before noon. By the time firefighters arrived, the building was engulfed in flames. As the fire spread, it also caught a nearby garage, and a home, on fire.
Grand Rapids Battalion Chief Daniel Caillouet says, "What's got us all curious is the amount of fire and how rapidly it spread throughout the building, particularly this time of day."
The Lexicon Club has been on the cities west side for over 60-years. Julie Vandermolen says, "Ya know, it's a place where we all get together as friends."
Most recently, the Lexicon was a members-only social club, set, in a Polish neighborhood. Members could sit down for a drink, attend a wedding, or go to a festival. Gary Wilkinson says, "Everybody knows Pulaski days. I mean, we're the hub for the shuttle buses. It's been a heck of a nice place. I've been a member for 30 years.
The Lexicon club was destroyed, but the memories remain. The members say they hope to rebuild. The cause of the fire is unknown.
