West Side neighbors concerned about 2nd shooting this week

GRAND RAPID (WZZM) -- People in a West Side neighborhood were woken up by gunfire for the second straight night early Wednesday morning, and police are trying to figure out who the shooter is.

Bullets were fired around 3:30 a.m. on McReynolds Ave. between 7th and 9th St. Police say the shooter fired at one home.

No one was hurt.

They don't believe the shooting is related to the one from late Monday night, but it happened in the same block of McReynolds. Two people were injured in that shooting, and police never found a suspect.

On Wednesday, neighbors expressed concern about an increase in crime in that area. GRPD doesn't believe that's the case.

"We're obviously concerned about the shootings because it is a violent crime," said Capt. Matt Ostopowicz. "But, the location and time is coincidental right now."

Neighbor Jane Gunnett said she believes there has been an increase in crime, for a while. "It's a lot of drugs," she said. "People got to make a living. What's the easiest way to do that? Drugs. I think that has a lot to do with the neighborhood."

Grand Rapids police say they have been working on that issue. They've been cracking down on drug activity, but don't think that there is a significant rise in crime in that area.
