John Ball Zoo unveils 25 year plan

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) The John Ball Zoo unveiled an updated Master Plan to the Kent County Finance Committee Tuesday that would improve several aspects of the facility over the next 25 years.

Included in the plan are:

  • New black bear exhibit and a "bear bridge" allowing bears to cross above a new entry path
  • A treetop Lemur exhibit
  • Indoor/Outdoor Stingray Lagoon
  • Children's Discovery Zone with carousel
  • Making the entire park and zoo ADA accessible
  • Additional off exhibit holding areas for animals
  • New amenities including more pavilions, playgrounds, bike paths, gardens and performance spaces
  • Improving the existing pond ecosystem
  • Conservation Education Center for the zoo's educational department and Grand Rapids Public Schools

The zoo plans to hold a series of open houses in March if the full Kent County Commission approves the master plan at their February 26 meeting.

The zoo's 2015 season opens on March 1.
