West Catholic Football Team Scores Practice at Notre Dame

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-  The West Catholic High School football team will travel to Indianapolis to open the 2012 season. The team will compete against Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit Academy in the first game of a triple header to be played on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Warren Central High School in Northwest Indianapolis. Two other schools confirmed for the event are Warren Central and Indianapolis Cathedral High School. Game time will be announced at a later date.

The team will leave West Catholic on chartered busses on Aug. 24. A highlight of the trip will be a stop in South Bend, Ind., where arrangements have been made for the team to practice on the University of Notre Dame practice field. Later, the team and their coaches will participate in a Mass celebrated by Father Peter McCormick, a 1995 graduate of West Catholic and rector at Notre Dame’s Keough Hall.

West Catholic Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Dan Rohn was contacted in January about making the trip when no opponents were available for the school’s week-one game. As last year’s conference champions, the Falcons boasted a 6-0 record (10-3 overall) with a total of 4 consecutive OK Blue conference championships. The team won the MHSAA Division 5 state championship in 2010.

The Indiana game will mark the first time West Catholic has traveled out of state to face an opponent.  The three-game event is an annual occurrence sponsored by Adidas. Expenses for the traveling teams are covered by the host school, Warren Central. Last year the third game in the series was aired live on ESPN. Information on advance ticket sales and travel will be provided as it becomes available.

“This is just a fantastic opportunity for our players -- the travel, the out-of-state play -- not many high school players can say they’ve practiced on the field at Notre Dame,” said Coach Rohn. “We’re especially excited that our own alum Father Pete McCormick will lead us in Mass on the day before the game. That will be an awe-inspiring experience for all of us, I know.”

Now celebrating its fiftieth year, West Catholic High School was founded by the Diocese of Grand Rapids in 1962. It has a current enrollment of 506 students.
