Davenport Alumni Event at John Ball Zoo

Members of the Davenport University Alumni are planning a day of fun and activities at John Ball Zoo Saturday, September 12th from 11am – 2pm. Join them in seeing some exciting exhibits such as the Tigers of the Realm, Living Shores Aquarium, Treetops Outpost and the Children’s Nature Play Zone.

Tickets are limited, so please register at: davenport.edu/GRZoo. Tickets include family friendly activities, lunch and entrance to the zoo. Cost: Adult $10; Child $5; Child under 2 years of age and under FREE. Meet at the Pond Pavilion within the Zoo grounds.

Back to School Rally at Lighthouse Full Life Center Church

Join Bishop Marvin L. Sapp and Lighthouse Full Life Center Church for the 18th Annual Back to School Rally on Saturday, August 22nd from 2 – 5pm on the academic campus. This is located in Kingdom Square, 600 Burton St. SE in Grand Rapids, MI. This includes students Pre-K through 12th Grade.

During this event, families in the community will receive free backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, clothes, food, various games and much more. Please join the estimated 2000 people who will partake in this important event.

Celtic Festival in Sparta on Saturday, August 8th

Whether you are Irish or not, Sparta, MI is the place to be on Saturday, August 8th for their Celtic Festival. The party begins at 10:45am at Rogers Park with the blessing of the Bagpipes!

The Festival will feature 5 Irish Bands, one of them being Pet in the Creel with Toby Bresnahan, five Dance Troupes, Celtic Food & Craft Vendors and a children’s area from noon until 5pm. At 9pm, Paddy’s Road takes the stage to close the festival.

Rogers Park is located at 75 N. Union St. Events will also take place at Balyeat Park, located at 208 Olmstead St.

Del Shannon Days Celebration this Week

The 25th Annual Summerfest Celebration featuring Del Shannon Days in Coopersville, MI unofficially started on Saturday, August 1st with “Quilts and their Stories” Show. There are more than 140 different quilts to view on display. Officially the festival was renamed the “Del Shannon Days” in 2014.

Antique tractors go on display at the Farm Museum on Tuesday, August 4th. Del Shannon Days officially kicks off from 4 – 8pm Wednesday, the 5th with “Kids Fest,” held at the corner of Main & Mason St.  The Teddy Bear Parade starts at 5pm. There will be plenty of different games and events for children throughout the celebration.

Friday Night, the 7th, features the Annual “Car Cruise” starting at 6pm throughout the Village ending at Keyser Manufacturing for the after-cruise party. Saturday, the 8th will feature more than 600 show cars, trucks and motorcycles. The show runs all day beginning at 7am.

School Supply Santa collecting again

School Supply Santa collecting again

The School Supply Santa all started eight years ago, thanks to Denise Kooiker of Byron Center, MI. Once again she is asking for your donations for kids in the Grand Rapids areas to start the upcoming school year.

Donations are distributed to administrators at schools in Byron Center, Kentwood, Wyoming, Kelloggsville, Godwin, Godfrey-Lee and Vista Charter Academy. Adding to the list this year are Rockford and Grandville schools.

Donations of backpacks and all school supplies can be dropped off at all the Kent District Library branches, local Starbucks and Biggby coffee houses, Talsma Furniture stores, Macatawa Banks, Byron Community Recreation and Gaines Township Hall. It is Festival Time once again at St. Joseph’s Church in Wright Township on Sunday, August 9, 2015  from 12 Noon until 5:00pm.

A great Country Style BBQ Chicken Dinner will be served from Noon until 4:00pm. Dinner is $8.00 for Adults and $5.00 for Children ages 5 – 12 years of age. Under 5 will eat FREE!

Along with live music, there will be games for children through teenagers, a Grand Raffle, quilt and mini raffles, craft booths, bake sale, a grocery wheel with home grown produce as prizes and a Vegas Tent.  A little bit for everyone!

Blueberry Cream Cheese Pie at it's Best

Blueberry Cream Cheese Pie                                           

2 pints Blue Berries (Divided)

½ cup White Sugar

½ cup Water

Pinch of Salt

I tablespoon Corn Starch mixed with a few spoonfuls of water till smooth

Mix 2/3 cup berries, sugar, water & salt and bring to a boil over med heat. Cook until most of the berries are cooked and the mixture has a nice color. Add the cornstarch, a little at a time, till thickened. Cook till clear, then remove from heat and let cool completely. Add the remaining fresh berries and pour over cream mixture. Refrigerate. Top with Cool Whip.  Toss a few fresh  berries on top just before serving. (Optional)
