GRAND RAPIDS, MI -  I just attended my first TEDx session and it was an eye-opening experience.  TEDx Grand Rapids drew a sold out crow of 600 people to the Civic Theatre downtown. 

A diverse group of 16 speakers from different areas of expertise shared their ideas on innovation.

"Growing with Gilda's" Plant Sale

Gilda's Club Grand Rapids, a free cancer support community of adults, children, families and friends will hold its second annual Community Plant Sale on the grounds of Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids, Friday, May 13 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturday, May 14 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The plant sale will take place rain or shine.

Thanks to the generosity and support of many local greenhouses and vendors, nearly 2,000 plants and flowers will be for sale at discount prices. Varieties will include perennials, annuals, shrubs, small trees, herbs and more! Expert gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and offer tips and “green thumb” advice.

All funds raised will benefit the ongoing development and maintenance of our Healing Garden at the Grand Rapids Clubhouse for members, family, friends and the community to visit. The Healing Garden provides an outdoor experience to engage all of the senses in a comforting and peaceful environment.

11 Mile silent bicycle ride

On Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 7:00 PM, the 7th annual Grand Rapids Ride of Silence will take place.   The Ride of Silence is a worldwide bicycle event that occurs yearly on the third Wednesday of May.  Cyclists take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways.

West Michigan Council Camp Fire USA

The West Michigan Council Camp Fire USA has After-School and Summer programs in ten Grand Rapids Public Schools and also the Camelot Woods Apartment Community Building. The programs are being attended Monday thru Friday by over 1,500 youth during the 2010/2011 program year.

The 33 week After-School program has an academic component where boys and girls practice reading and math, they also can get help with their homework. Then the kids have activities, such as dance, art, poetry, music, drama club, service-learning and field trips.

MomsLikeMe.com website manager, Sarah Cavanaugh, was lucky enough to get a tour of the NEW Red's Hobby Farm at the John Ball Zoo with Zoo Director, Bert Vescolani.  This new exhibit will expand the popular petting zoo area.  In addition, John Ball Zoo is excited to have added some friendly pigs to the petting zoo experience, as well as a new female calf.  You can peek at the behind the scenes of the tour on WZZM13's Take Five & Company, this Tuesday morning, May 10th, at 9 a.m.

Right to Life event moved due to flooding

Due to flooding at Riverside Park, the Grand Rapids Right to Life Bike & Hike will be held at the DeltaPlex (2500 Turner Ave.) on Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Flooding from the Grand River has made paths along Riverside Park unusable, as well as paths along Kent Trails and Johnson Park to the west.
