Kid's Guide to ArtPrize

Grand Rapids is an awesome place to grow up. Now. It used to be boring, or so I’ve been told.

I grew up in Grand Ledge and spent my entire childhood wondering why my parents insisted on raising me in a constant state of geographically inflicted ennui(I learned that word in 8th grade. It was perfect timing.) that could have been completely avoided had we stayed in Detroit, where I was born. We also would have avoided good schools, a lack of traffic, as well as a whole lot of bodily and property safety; but those were not my concern. I wanted Eastern Market, the Ren Cen, the Riverfront, big malls, and Boblo Island.

A few weeks ago my kids and I were walking around downtown (Grand Rapids, not Detroit) and A.P. said, “We’re lucky to have so much big art and sculptures here, Mom”. It’s working. My kids dig where they live.

He enlisted City Commissioner Dave Shaffer and School Board Member Jon O?Connor to help assemble a group to make the event a reality. The Kid Parade will begin at 11am sharp. The parade starts at Westend Street, one block west of Covell Road, and will proceed west on Leonard to the Elk?s Lodge 48 (Highlands Golf Course). Fashion's night out Grand Rapids is on the horizon

From: http://www.fashionsnightoutgr.com/

For the second year in a row the world will be celebrating Fashion's Night Out together. It all started last year in New York when the United Council of Fashion Designers of America, American Vogue, NYC & Company, and the City of New York created FNO to help patrons understand the vast industry of fashion and how it helps our economy. Fashion is the largest industry in New York City. The industry employs 175,000 New Yorkers which creates $10 billion in total wages. None of these jobs exist if people don't shop. That is why it was time to make shopping fun again.

Fashion's Night Out Grand Rapids has been in the planning stage for months, but now the time is almost here. On September 10th retail stores around Grand Rapids will come together for the first time in support of one thing, “making shopping fun again”.
