Free woodchips for landscaping!

The City of Grand Rapids offers free woodchips!   They are available at 2001 Butterworth Ave SW. They are free of charge and can be picked up from the first Monday in April through the second Saturday in December  during the hours of 9 am to 4:45 pm, Monday through Saturday.   Bring your buckets and a shovel and get ready to spruce up your yard!

The City of Grand Rapids Yard Waste drop off site also offers a drop-off site for residential yard waste. Grand Rapids city residents can drop-off leaves, brush, and tree branches at 2001 Butterworth SW. The days of operation are Monday through Saturday during the hours of 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The 2011 Earth Day Celebration is a joint fundraiser for the West Michigan Environmental Action Council's water quality programs, and the Grand River Water Festival.  This year's celebration features environmental exhibits, a cash bar, and special performances by Earthwork Music's Mary Erlewine & Seth Bernard, Rachel Davis and Dominic, of "Starlight Six" fame, plus the opening act, Hawks & Owls.

The 2011 Grand Rapids Bicycle Summit: Inspiration to Action celebrates Grand Rapids’ growing bicycle culture!  This all day event will take place on Friday, May 6, 2011, from 8am to 4:30pm at the Eberhard Center, GVSU downtown campus in Grand Rapids.  Taking place during National Bike Month, the Summit hopes to inspire personal, corporate, and local government action to make our city and region more bicycle friendly!

This full-day bicycle advocacy conference is intended for bicycling advocates, bicycle club members, bike trail supporters, Complete Streets advocates, elected officials, public health officials, community planners, landscape architects, civil engineers, bicycle-industry retailers and manufacturers, and the general public.

Yes, being green has definitely caught on. Manufacturers, architects, and businesses of all kinds have found ingenious ways to conserve and preserve. But how about every day family households that want to help? What can they do that’s affordable, simple and saves? PARTY FOR THE PLANET at John Ball Zoo is the place to find out! The event will take place on Saturday, April 16, from 10am until 3pm.

Over 25 West. Michigan organizations will be attending PARTY FOR THE PLANET and each will offer something unique.

Let worms eat your garbage! Vermicomposting, or worm composting, is a way to compost your plant and vegetable waste indoors, all year round. Blandford Nature Center staff will teach you haw to make your very own worm bin. Participants will receive detailed instructions on the creation and upkeep of a complete worm compost bin.
