Yes, being green has definitely caught on. Manufacturers, architects, and businesses of all kinds have found ingenious ways to conserve and preserve. But how about every day family households that want to help? What can they do that’s affordable, simple and saves? PARTY FOR THE PLANET at John Ball Zoo is the place to find out! The event will take place on Saturday, April 16, from 10am until 3pm.

Over 25 West. Michigan organizations will be attending PARTY FOR THE PLANET and each will offer something unique.

Yonker honors local business owner for contributions to gender, racial equality

State Rep. Ken Yonker and other West Michigan lawmakers this week honored local business owner Bing Goei, who received the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce's Diversity Visionary Award.

Goei, the CEO of Eastern Floral and founder of the Goei Center which nurtures local businesses owned by women and minorities, has served as a leader in business and his community for years.

"Mr. Goei is a role model in our community," said Yonker, R-Caledonia. "He is precisely the type of leader we can look to for an example of how to run a business and how to support the community. He's a model for integrity in business and in his personal life and I'm very happy that the chamber gave him this honor."

Yonker and some of his fellow representatives presented Goei with a tribute from their state offices, "in recognition of the tireless work that Bing Goei has done to promote racial and gender equality in West Michigan."

Former boycott organizers to lead annual Cesar E. Chavez Social Justice March

March 30, 2011, Grand Rapids, MI -  Michael Johnston, a former boycott volunteer, will be among the hundreds of marchers stretching down César E. Chávez Boulevard, to help celebrate the work of the late farm worker rights and labor leader during the 11th Annual César E. Chávez Social Justice March and “Community Gathering” on Thursday, March 31, 2011.

The annual March along Grandville Avenue (César E. Chávez Blvd.) will begin at 11:00 AM at the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, 1204 Grandville Avenue SW, Grand Rapids, and end at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 1630 Godfrey Avenue SW, in Wyoming.

The “Community Gathering”, a student directed program, follows the March at 12:00 PM at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church.

For the second year in a row, West Catholic teams took first and second place in the Phi Division at the Math Challenge Competition at Grand Rapids Community College on March 19.

Benefit for Caitlyn Bilkovsky

Caitlyn was diagnosed with “Chiari Malformation” in November 2010. Chiari Malformation is when the tonsils of the cerebellum are too long and they grow into the spinal column, putting pressure on the spinal cord and block the flow of spinal fluid. It can also cause pockets of spinal fluid to form in the spinal column and if not treated can rupture and cause paralysis.

Caitlyn underwent surgery on December 13, 2010 and has had many complications since then leading to multiple hospitalizations. Her Mother has been her main caregiver with around the clock care and due to this, her Mother’s job has been terminated.

The benefit being held on Saturday, March 26, 2011, is to help with the family’s medical expenses of $50,000.00. The benefit will be held at Kuzzin’s Lounge from 5-9pm on Saturday, March 26, 2011.

West Catholic to host fourth annual “Celebrate West!”Auction March 26

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH -- West Catholic High School will hold its fourth annual Celebrate West! Auction on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 6 p.m. in the gym, 1801 Bristol NW.

The evening will begin with another delicious dinner served by Billy K. Catering followed by an opportunity to donate to specific school needs – including academics, athletics, extra-curricular activities and technology – at the “Fund a Need” tables. All donations these funds will be matched dollar-for-dollar with gifts from sponsors.
