The 2011 Earth Day Celebration is a joint fundraiser for the West Michigan Environmental Action Council's water quality programs, and the Grand River Water Festival.  This year's celebration features environmental exhibits, a cash bar, and special performances by Earthwork Music's Mary Erlewine & Seth Bernard, Rachel Davis and Dominic, of "Starlight Six" fame, plus the opening act, Hawks & Owls.

Local artists taking over downtown Grand Rapids April 15!
On April 15, 2011 from 6-11pm, local artists are taking over downtown Grand Rapids!
Visitors are invited to experience places they may not access on a regular basis as 2 trolleys provide transportation between 25 unique downtown businesses, galleries and studio spaces. With over 250 local artists and performers involved, this event it is sure to be an exciting, dynamic evening.

Maps provide attendees a comprehensive guide to the event including listings for over 25 participating art hot spots. Major destinations include, Avenue for the Arts, the Kendall College studio spaces, Kendall College Galleries, Site:Lab, the Ionia Street Entertainment District, WMCAT, the GRAM and the UICA.

CC & WC students volunteer in Haiti over spring break

CC & WC students volunteer in Haiti over spring break

Students from Catholic Central and West Catholic spent Alternative Spring Break in Haiti helping people in the town of Seguin, a community about 20 miles south of Port au Prince.

Tim Ryan, director of Haiti Needs You, organized the trip with staff and parents from both high schools. The students checked water quality of home water filters, helped build latrines and provided tarp coverings to protect peoples’ corn stalk homes from the rain. They also worked and played with children in a local school.

Students who attended included, from Catholic Central: Shea Farley with her mother, Geraldine;  Leah Vicini with her mother, Mary Ann; and Joseph Leeuwenburg with his mother, Katherine. From West Catholic: McKenzie Samuelson, Kathryn Miller, Valerie Stacey, Rachel Golembiewski, Taylor TenBrock, and Jakob Berguist  with his father Dr. Michael Bergquist.

Plans are for the joint mission trip to become a yearly occurrence.

2011 Grand Rapids Bicycle Summit: Inspiration to Action

The 2011 Grand Rapids Bicycle Summit: Inspiration to Action celebrates Grand Rapids’ growing bicycle culture!  This all day event will take place on Friday, May 6, 2011, from 8am to 4:30pm at the Eberhard Center, GVSU downtown campus in Grand Rapids.  Taking place during National Bike Month, the Summit hopes to inspire personal, corporate, and local government action to make our city and region more bicycle friendly!

This full-day bicycle advocacy conference is intended for bicycling advocates, bicycle club members, bike trail supporters, Complete Streets advocates, elected officials, public health officials, community planners, landscape architects, civil engineers, bicycle-industry retailers and manufacturers, and the general public.

Gimme Shelter - A three day Symposium

Gimme Shelter, April 7 - 9, 2011, is a three day symposium on Human Shelter and Sustainability.  The 3 day event began with a talk by bestselling author Sarah Susanka ('The Not So Big House' book series), and continues with a variety of guest speakers and workshops on issues ranging from creating community, living a sustainable lifestyle, green Grand Rapids and using design and architecture as tools for social change.
