Volunteer Orientation

Giving back to the community is a fulfilling purpose and helping an adult, improve their English language, reading and writing skills is the perfect opportunity.

This orientation gives possible volunteers an understanding of the Literacy Center of West Michigan programs, the chance to meet a staff member, learn how to volunteer to assist an adult who is working to better their language skills, while interacting with those who have the same literacy enthusiasm.

This Volunteer Orientation takes place on Tuesday, October 26 from 10:00am – 11:00am at The Literacy Center of West Michigan located at 1120 Monroe Avenue NW, Suite 240 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Visit www.literacycenterwm.org for more information about the Literacy Center.

Zoo Goes Boo Returns

Let’s get this Zoo Goes Boo party started! Superhero is the theme for this favorite Halloween Ritual.

Community families are invited to visit the Zoo located at 1300 W Fulton St. in Grand Rapids this weekend, October 21, 22 & 23 or next weekend, October 28, 29, & 30 in their costumes! From 10:00am to 3:00pm each day families can check out the Zoo all decked out, enjoy special animal demos plus live entertainment. Don’t miss the treat booths!

Since this is a children’s event, adults in costume are encouraged to dress appropriately.

Admission can be purchased at the gate for: $8/person, $3/person for members, 1 year old & under are free.

Public Night at the Observatory on Saturday

The public is invited to experience sky objects above, 2 Saturdays a month through October at the James C. Veen Observatory.

Visitors have the opportunity to experience the night skies on Saturday, September 24 from 8:30pm to midnight with Veen Observatory telescopes and member’s equipment. The night sky will feature Saturn and Neptune, along with deep Sky Objects such as nebulas, galaxies & various star clusters.This is also a chance to tour the facility & check out the audio visual presentation about the Observatory & the GRAAA.

This Public Night takes place only if the sky is clear. Starting times vary with the sunset. It is a quarter mile walk from the parking area to the top of the hill. If need, ask the lot attendant about assistance to the Observatory.

The Grand Rapid Amateur Astronomical Association invite the sky enthusiast to this Saturday’s observing night, as long as the sky is clear.

This is an opportunity to experience the moon, Mars, the rings of the planet, Saturn, along with deep sky objects through the Observatory & member’s telescopes. Guests can also tour the facility & check out the audio visual GRAAA & Observatory presentation.

Visit the Veen Observatory located at 3308 Kissing Rock Avenue SE in Lowell on Saturday, August 13 from 9:30pm to midnight. Keep in mind that the Observatory is located at the top of a hill. Visitors park below & walk up to the Observatory. Ask the parking attendant for assistance, if needed

Admission: $3 for Adults, $2 for 17 years & younger, free for children under 5 years of age.

The Grand Haven, Spring Lake & Ferrysburg Chamber of Commerce invite residents & visitors to take part in this sand art building activity this Saturday.

After 2 hours of sand creating, individuals, teams & families will be judged and awarded prizes on their unique presentation.
