GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Michigan Blood is hosting a special blood drive at the Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids clubhouse on Friday, Sept. 5 to benefit GCGR.

For every person who registers and attempts to give blood at this event, Michigan Blood and Crystal Flash will each donate $10 to Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids. As an added incentive, the first 75 people who attempt to donate will receive a $10 gift card from SpartanNash to use at either D&W Fresh Market or Family Fare stores.

The mutually beneficial partnership between collecting blood and treating cancer patients is the reason for this blood drive. Donation drives are essential because 33 percent of blood products are used in the treatment of cancer patients.

“The blood they collect goes toward filling the needs of cancer patients receiving treatment,” said Erik Wolenberg, marketing and public relations manager for GCGR. “That’s why there’s such a strong tie between Michigan Blood and Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids—we’re working together to impact the lives of those affected by cancer here in West Michigan.”

Previous partnerships between Michigan Blood and GCGR have raised more than $20,000. A successful turnout at the Sept. 5 event could lead to a regular series of blood drives to boost fundraising, blood supplies and awareness for both organizations.

The blood drive will be held on Friday, Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Community Room at Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids.

All potential donors need to be 17 years old (16 with parent or guardian permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and pass a health screening.  Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged and can be scheduled at 1-866-MIBLOOD (642-5663) or online at www.miblood.org.
