Humane Society of West Michigan (HSWM) has won the Grand Rapids Gem competition, organized by Grand Rapids-based Craft-Revival Jewelers. As a result of earning 65 percent of the public vote on grandrapidsgem.com, HSWM earned $6,640.
“We are truly honored and ecstatic to be the winner of this exciting competition,” said Trudy Ender, executive director of the Humane Society of West Michigan. “We currently have 300 animals at our shelter and these funds will be used directly for their care. As a 100-percent donor-funded organization, donations like this are vital and we couldn’t care for our animals without the community support.”
The public vote determined which nonprofit organization received the vast majority (80 percent) of the proceeds from an online auction of a custom-made necklace designed by Craft-Revival. The two other participating charities, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks and Kids’ Food Basket, each received 10 percent of the auction price.
“This competition was a tremendous success,” said Jayson Case, co-owner of Craft Revival. “We’re ecstatic that the necklace is going to a party that truly values the craftsmanship and that the bid will support the great work of our local nonprofits.”
The auction of the necklace, called “The Grand,” brought in $8,300 from an anonymous bidder. Custom designed with 117 diamonds and nods to Grand Rapids icons in precious metals, the piece served as the family-owned jeweler’s ArtPrize entry on display at its downtown store, 16 Ionia SW.
“The Grand Rapids-centric design was a big part of our effort, a way of expressing our thanks to the city for the warm welcome that we’ve received since opening the store two years ago,” said Case.
