Q&A with Michael Crittenden, owner and producer at Mackinaw Harvest Studios and frontman of Troll for Trout.

What’s been going on for you at Mackinaw Harvest this year?

We’re still plugging away at local releases. We have also been trying to grow into more of a national studio, which has been a goal.

Mackinaw Harvest also hosts the Youth Recording Academy, which is a program for students interested in music production. How did it start?

The original concept was to create an after-school class for the public schools. I had a hard time getting it through the system. After about a year of meetings, I finally got sick of it. I put it on the backburner for a while, but kept thinking about it. One day, I woke up and said, ‘Why don’t I just do it myself as an after school program?’

For high school kids only?

Yes. This was more designed for the at-risk segment. When you hear the term ‘at risk,’ people kind of get the picture of what that kid looks like and I don’t think it’s very accurate. It doesn’t have to do with financial status or neighborhood. It has to do with kids who are mentally...
