A better doughnut coming to Grand Rapids

A better doughnut coming to Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Doughnuts are available all over, including Meijer, Family Fare,  Marge’s Donut Den and Sandy’s Donuts, which are in the suburbs of Grand Rapids.

The city of Grand Rapids, however, doesn't have a gourmet donut shop. Propaganda Donuts is hoping to change that, but they need your help.

Propaganda Doughnuts wants to be locally focused, community oriented gourmet donut shop, open in the morning for breakfast and brunch visits, and until after the bars close.  Right now they are a pop up store;  they will open for a day,  make doughnuts until they sell out, and then leave.  However, the owner of Propaganda Doughnuts wants to open a permanent location, which is why the business has submitted a proposal at Start Garden.

Guilty verdicts in Santiago Zapata murder case

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Two men are facing life in prison for the murder of a GVSU advisor in his home.

A jury Monday found Timothy Miller, 25, guilty of robbery and felony murder in the September 2012 death of Santiago Zapata.

A separate jury reached the same verdict against Miller's co-defendant, Maceo Scott, 25, last week, but the verdict was sealed until the jury in Miller's trial reached its decision.

Zapata, 50, was found beaten and stabbed in the basement of his Myrtle St. NW home.  Prosecutors say Miller and Scott intended to rob Zapata, but their plan fell apart and led to the man's murder.

Because of the felony murder conviction, both men are facing a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole, according to a court official.

Scott and Miller will be sentenced on June 6.

Juvenile Diabetes fundraiser at Kenowa Hills Soccer Game

Juvenile Diabetes fundraiser at Kenowa Hills Soccer Game

Kenowa Hills High School soccer players, Kate Carey and Madi Buechner have organized a fundraiser to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes. This event will take place at 6:30pm on Thursday, May 2nd at Kenowa Hills, when Kenowa will host Muskegon Big Reds in a game titled, “The Blue Game." These two gals did this completely on their own, according to soccer coach, Jason Snyder.

To quote Kate, “We have one teammate who has juvenile diabetes and one other member, whose sister is affected by this disease.”

The Kenowa team has been selling T-Shirts and has several donated gifts that will be raffled off the day of the game. They are always looking for donations and hope to raise thousands of dollars for this foundation.

Anyone willing to make a donation can call the Kenowa Hills Athletic Office at 616-784-2115.

Go Kenowa!
